THE FINER DETAILS:

Congratulations! You will be staying in one of the most special homes in the Osa.  We thank you for choosing us and we will do everything in our power to ensure you have a wonderful time.  We want to explain a few details about your visit – by signing this agreement it will assure us that you have read the information below and agree and understand it.  (Mostly it just says “We do our best but it’s the Jungle”.)
1. Cabo Matapalo – wow, it is real rain forest, and, especially in the rainy season, getting there may well be part of the adventure.  The roads need to be treated with a lot of respect.  Since we have unpredictable weather and road conditions in Costa Rica and especially as its a dirt road from Puerto Jimenez to Matapalo, please be careful and make sure you are in a reliable and capable vehicle (4WD is a must) as your drive is at your own risk.  Bear in mind, you do not have to drive – we can always arrange to get you a taxi from Puerto Jimenez or arrange for a driver to bring you from San Jose or wherever your Costa Rican adventure may have brought you.
2. Thieves are rare in Matapalo, but please put valuables in the safe when not in use.  Ok?
3. If you or your guests should damage our home or our stuff by being negligent, please understand that, in all fairness, you are responsible for the cost of the repair or replacement.  We will get the work done just as we would if it were our fault, but we will need you to pay whatever it costs.
4. Especially in the rainy season, be a bit careful with the stairs, steps, decks and bridges – surprise –  they can be slippery when wet. Be careful, like you would in any remote location.
5. Things are can be tricky in the jungle sometimes so systems sometimes stop working or break down and while we fix them as fast as we can, we rely on your seeing it as part of the rain forest experience. Don’t worry, we are good at this and its unusual, but in your essential packing, please include your sense of humor, adventure and sense of proportion.
6. This is an off the grid location which means the house runs on solar and battery power so please: no hair dryers, curling irons, electric shavers and, if you have brought any, nix also on toasters, microwaves, electric kettles, air conditioners, plasma TVs or electric cars.  Our power is 110 volt, same as in the US and it will charge your electronics, run the lights, fans, refrigerator and so forth, but the only back up is a generator, so please be green and switch lights off if you are not using them; unplug anything from the wall sockets that you are not using; you know what we mean – and oh yes, please try to use towels more than once.
7. No mad parties please.  Really.  Not unless we can come too.

Please also remember to watch your step around the house – particularly if you have enjoyed a few drinks.  The staircase within the house is not to code and there are many steps up and down to the house together with deliberately wobbly rope bridges – be careful!

8. As previously noted, the only authorized guests are those identified in this Agreement.  We want to be reasonable but, as we are off the grid, resources are limited and costly, so to avoid interruptions of power, water and propane, please be reasonable about visitors to the house and property. Occasional visitors, reasonable and no problem.  Guests arriving and staying all day…everyday, not reasonable – please do not put Carlos in the position of having to bring this to your attention.  If you do wish to invite additional guests, please discuss this with Carlos and he will advise of any additional fee due and can make any necessary changes to the bedroom configurations.
9. NO Smoking inside the house – given our indoor/outdoor living we define this as any location with a roof on it.
10. Keep our property and stuff in good order. Be nice – wear a shirt or T- Shirt to sit on our furniture.
11. Pets allowed?  No – there is real wildlife out there and it just would not be safe.
12. Housekeeping:  Our Team; Sianne and Daniel, ensure the house is cleaned every other day and sheets and towels are changed regularly.  They do an amazing job keeping the house ship-shape and fresh but please be aware that in the jungle with the humidity, particularly in the rainy season, that sheets and towels will not feel crisp and dry at all times.  We do have a few beach towels but expect you to bring your own – Please don’t take our nice white towels away from the house.  They are hard to replace.  Please ensure you keep food locked away in the cupboards at night so as not to attract nighttime visitors.  Please also bear in mind that ants will find any food bits left on the floor or furniture and dirty dishes not promptly cleaned up will encourage an ant invasion – this is their jungle too!  Finally, please, please, please DO NOT feed the wildlife – we are privileged to have daily wildlife visits including monkeys and all sorts of birds.  Despite the lack of walls in the house, they stay away as they do not see perceive it as a source of food.  Please do not mess with this.  We like our worlds in happy parallel non-contact!
13. Swimming Pool: its delightful and we hope you enjoy it – please supervise kids under 12 as they (and you actually) use the pool at your risk – Carlos maintains the pool but it’s the jungle so occasionally we cannot avoid crabs or other small animals falling in or the occasional heron popping by for a look-see.
14. Wi-Fi: We provide the best internet we can buy but, honestly, it’s only adequate.  Sorry, it’s something we are conscious at, but it’s remote and it’s the jungle, you know?  Treat it like solar – adequate but not home, so don’t count on it except for e-mail, social media updates, reservation confirmations (intl. flights check in and others), weather check, surf reports and simple browsing.  Starlink has been the best to know method.  Even when disconnections happen, it will only last for 15 seconds to begin. Depending on how many teenagers you have with you, it is sufficiently robust for some software updates, video streaming, and other work purposes.  You may be lucky and have no issues but sometimes it will fail and it may take sometime to return.  Please do not come into Matapalo requiring perfect internet – if all does breakdown – the Osa Tropical office in Puerto Jimenez can assist in an emergency.
15. Water and Septic: we use a well and the water tastes great  – high mineral content though.  Again, it’s the jungle and we use a septic system, not sewers. They work fine but don’t flush anything bulky – the usual warning on feminine products etc. which have clogged the septic system in other houses (though not ours) but if it does, you could be charged damages.
16. At the risk of being way obvious, it is a jungle out there so refrain from stepping anywhere, particularly off trail without looking first.  Avoid putting hands or feet down any holes.  Be careful what you touch.  When out and about watch out for barbed wire fencing – its common in Costa Rica. Tell your guests.  Also, if you venture from the house after 3pm, please take a flashlight with you.  Sunset at 6pm can creep up on you and if you are in the shade of the trees it will start to get dark by 5:30pm – don’t get caught out!
17. We do not give refunds if your holiday or travel is ruined by weather (or earthquakes, tsunamis, plagues of locusts, return of the Terminator or Presidential elections).
18. This is our house and our home. We love it and we want you to love it too. We want you to have a fabulous time and we hope everything goes great.  It always has so far. Be sensible and responsible for your belongings.  If you suffer a misfortune – an accident, injury, crime or illness while with us, Carlos is there to help.  We promise to try to do what we can, but we don’t promise a misfortune won’t ever happen or be responsible if it does.

And finally in legal speak (we used Google Translate)

In signing you agree and understand that it is a condition of this reservation that:

  1. The Homeowners are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest.
  2. All guests expressly assume the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others whom they invite to use the premise.
  • You are responsible of the rental and everyone and any persons on the property during your rental time, and will not pursue any court actions in any country worldwide against any owners, booking agents, property staff, property managers, corporations, or those associated with Casa Vida Verde.

Thank you for choosing Casa Vida Verde and thank you for your understanding.

Have a wonderful time – Pura Vida!
